Barthé was open to studying and depicting people of all races, creeds, and demographics. Eager to understand the nature of societies and the individuals who function within them, Barthé sought to capture the spiritual essence of his subjects.

Wide winnowing baskets, known as fanners, were the earliest and most important type of coiled basketry made by Africans in North America. From the introduction of rice in the late 1600s to well into the 20th century, fanner baskets were used to separate rice grains from husks. The large, circular fanner basket has a flat bottom with sides extending just a few inches above the bottom to form a flat, shallow basket.

One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Alexander Calder gained international fame for his use of movement and color in sculpture. Like his other works, his tapestries embrace geometric designs, dynamic shapes and an overall feeling of motion and movement. Even in this more fixed, stationary form, Calder managed to infuse these weavings with fluidity and momentum characteristic of his artistic style.

Isabel Bishops works are by turns charming and monumental, classical and modern, affecting and severe. But they all reveal in greater or lesser degree a powerful longing for unrepressed vitality and a carefully preserved distance from it. It's the tension between the two that gives Bishop's art its edge.

Influenced by West African cultures, Fahamu Pecou’s works offer a critique on the contemporary topics of celebrity, media, and racism. Dr. Sean Meighoo coined the term “‘Fahamenology’ of performance,” describing the way Pecou’s works undo oppressive cultural structures of experience and consciousness, attempting a liberation of today’s marked male subject. Specifically, Native Tongue/Ogbe Oyeku depicts the artist himself, wearing a backwards Dan mask and sagging denim jeans, both politicized fashion statements. Both provocateur and griot, Pecou asserts his marked embodiment visible, inviting the viewer to contemplate the cross-cultural implications of ritual/resistance and life/death.
